The Problem with Christians

Are you committed to God? Are you ready to stand up for Him? Can you explain to someone what He means to you? Do your actions line up with your words?

I’m asking you these questions because I believe, now more than ever, we as Christians need to be ready to stand for God. The reason is simple. Non-christians don’t have a clear idea who God is and what He stands for.

There are so many different views of the Christian faith and so many different variations that non-christians have developed a view of Christianity that is scripturally incorrect. How can we expect people to come to Christ when they don’t have the correct picture of who Christ is?

I believe that any person who grasps what God has done for us will see God’s love and power over all circumstances. This should cause the person at think at the very least. What happens from there is up to the work of God’s Spirit.

As Christians, we don’t make other Christians, God makes other christians. We are not capable of changing a persons heart but we are capable of presenting Jesus, God and His Holy Spirit in the correct light. The correct light is one that is scriptually correct, non-contradictary and full of justice, love and grace. Don’t add what you have seen or heard about God to the gospel. The gospel speaks for itself and it does not need your help to make it more interesting. If you think the gospel needs a bit of ’spicing up’ then you don’t know it properly. Take some time to read more about it, from the words of God himself found in the bible.

People in this world are looking for truth, they are searching so hard for it. The problem with christians is that we have surrounded God’s truth with clever stories, anecdotes, personal thoughts and ideas and other irrelevant stuff. Why do we feel the need to cloud the truth we believe with these extra’s?

Are we scared? If so, what are we scared of?

Are we embarrassed? If so, then you don’t really believe what you say you believe.

Do we lack the knowledge? If so, go and get the knowledge – spend time with your God.

I believe that as Christians we don’t know God well enough at times. So how can we paint a picture of God for this world when we aren’t well aquainted with the subject. Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

So the problem with Christians, especially those in our westernised countries, is that we are comfortable with our lack of knowledge of God. We are comfortable with a weak portrayal of who God is. We are comfortable with the fact that others don’t understand why we believe what we believe. We are comfortable with the idea that our friends and family who are not christian may not go to heaven and may not have a relationship with God.

Our comfort has stunted our effectiveness in sharing the love of God with others. Let’s remember that “the church is most likely the only oganisation that exists for its non-members” (unknown).

We as a church should be working to enrich the lives of the people who don’t come to church with the love and grace of God.
